Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, based in Evanston, Illinois, is seeking a part-time Human Resources Generalist to support a range of HR operations on site. The role focuses on payroll, onboarding for student workers, adjunct faculty, and Course of Study faculty, along with benefits administration and everyday HR administration, across a 28-hour workweek.
Position Summary
The Human Resources Generalist is a part-time role (28 hours per week) responsible for a broad spectrum of administrative, operational, and employee support functions to ensure the smooth operation of the Seminary’s HR Office. This position provides high-quality service to employees, supervisors, and the wider campus community while handling payroll, onboarding, benefits, and compliance tasks.
Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate HR files and records with attention to confidentiality; perform periodic audits to ensure documents are complete and properly filed.
- Oversee payroll operations, respond to employee inquiries, correct processing errors, and distribute paychecks.
- Implement and review payroll systems to ensure timely and precise processing of salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and deductions.
- Audit payroll for errors and correct them as needed; apply standard controls before processing payroll.
- Manage ADP timecard details for auditing and time-entry accuracy, including missed punches when applicable.
- Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual compliance reports and tax filings (941s, W-2s, 1095-C statements).
- Coordinate full-cycle hiring for student workers, adjunct faculty, and Course of Study faculty from posting to documentation and approvals.
- Administer onboarding for temporary and part-time instructional staff, including contracts and payroll documentation compliance.
- Serve as the primary onboarding contact for newly hired student workers, adjuncts, and Course of Study faculty, guiding them on policies, payroll schedules, benefits eligibility, and expectations.
- Collaborate with academic departments and supervisors to ensure timely hiring, onboarding, and processing of employment changes for adjunct and Course of Study faculty.
- Track and document compliance with mandatory and optional training and professional development, including safety and anti-harassment training.
- Support onboarding experiences by coordinating orientation materials, training resources, technology access, and related logistics.
- Assist with HR programs including compensation, benefits, leave, performance management, employee engagement, safety, and development.
- Handle employment-related inquiries, reference ADA policy, and partner on the Affirmative Action Plan; refer complex matters to senior staff as needed.
- Support internal communications and maintain content on the Seminary intranet (myGETS) for consistent messaging.
- Respond to common applicant and employee questions about policies and processes; escalate complex questions to senior HR staff.
- Assist Academic Affairs with editing and posting adjunct letters of agreement in ADP, align pay with letters, and update payroll records accordingly.
- Approve monthly timecards in ADP.
- Own the student worker lifecycle from requisition through posting, onboarding, training supervisors to approve timecards, and Federal Work Study reporting for Financial Aid.
- Act as a liaison with external benefits providers and vendors for health, disability, and retirement programs.
- Conduct or assist with new hire orientation.
- Plan, execute, or report on events such as benefits enrollment periods, all-employee meetings, recognition events, and retirement celebrations.
- Provide general clerical support to the HR department.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Associate’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
- Minimum 1 year of HR experience.
- Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
- SHRM-CP is a plus.
- Prior related office experience is preferred.
