The HR Generalist position at People's Express, Inc. is based onsite in Whitmore Lake, Michigan, supporting day-to-day human resources activities in a small nonprofit setting. The role covers recruitment, onboarding, payroll, benefits, employee relations, and training to nurture an inclusive, mission-driven workplace.
Responsibilities
- Lead full-cycle recruitment, from job postings and sourcing through screening, interviewing, and selecting candidates.
- Coordinate onboarding and orientation programs for new hires.
- Oversee completion of employment documentation and background checks.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Keep accurate HR files and personnel records up to date.
- Administer leave programs including FMLA and ADA accommodations, plus related policies.
- Support the development, updates, and rollout of HR policies.
- Generate HR reports and metrics for leadership review.
- Collaborate with payroll providers to ensure accurate employee data and timely payroll processing.
- Maintain records related to compensation, deductions, and employment status changes.
- Review payroll inputs for accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Administer benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, leave programs, FMLA, and wellness initiatives.
- Serve as the primary contact for employee benefits inquiries.
- Assist with compensation analyses and salary administration.
- Support annual open enrollment activities.
- Provide guidance to employees and managers on HR policies, procedures, and workplace concerns.
- Help resolve employee relations issues in a fair, professional, and confidential manner.
- Support employee engagement initiatives and recognition programs.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, mission-driven workplace culture.
- Coordinate performance evaluation processes and employee development initiatives.
- Assist managers with performance improvement plans and coaching strategies.
- Identify training needs and coordinate learning opportunities.
- Maintain training records and compliance certifications.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- 2 to 3 years of progressive human resources experience.
- At least 1 year of payroll processing experience preferred; Paychex experience a plus.
- Knowledge of benefits administration.
- Leave administration experience a plus.
- Demonstrated experience across multiple HR functions including recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, payroll, and compliance.
- SHRM-CP, PHR, or other HR certification preferred.
- Knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS/payroll systems.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small-team environment.

Classification
Non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act. This is a full-time, hourly position eligible for overtime in accordance with applicable federal and state laws.
Salary and Compensation
