Human Resources Director
Job Description
Trellis Supportive Care is a mission-driven non-profit healthcare organization, and this full-time, exempt Human Resources Director role is designed to be deeply hands-on. In this onsite position in Winston-Salem, NC, you will lead and execute core HR functions that strengthen employee relations, performance management, engagement and retention, benefits administration, and compliance with employment regulations.
Role focus
As the primary HR leader, you will serve as a trusted advisor for managers and employees, helping resolve complex employee relations matters, guiding performance expectations, and ensuring consistent HR policies and practices. You will also partner with department leaders on performance improvement plans and goal setting, while owning the performance review process end-to-end.
Responsibilities
- Act as the primary point of contact for employee relations issues, conflict resolution, and workplace investigations
- Provide hands-on coaching and support to managers on employee-related matters
- Support a positive, inclusive, and compliant workplace culture
- Own the performance review process end-to-end, including tools, timelines, and manager training
- Partner with department leaders on performance improvement plans and goal setting
- Provide effective leadership by communicating performance expectations and delivering performance feedback
- Manage HR policies, procedures, and consistent practices
- Analyze and report HR key metrics
- Design and personally lead employee retention strategies for healthcare and non-profit staff
- Develop and run recognition programs to support morale and engagement
- Monitor turnover trends and implement targeted interventions
- Oversee employee benefits programs, including medical, dental, vision, life, and ancillary benefits
- Administer the 403(b) Retirement Plan as an administrator and primary point of contact
- Direct payroll processing and ensure compliance by understanding the full-cycle payroll process
- Collaborate with the Payroll Administrator and act as backup as needed
- Administer and maintain compensation structures and benefits programs
- Conduct periodic salary benchmarking and equity analyses
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEOC, and HIPAA-related HR matters
- Maintain up-to-date policies, employee handbooks, and required labor postings
- Manage audits, reporting, and risk mitigation related to HR compliance
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (master’s degree preferred)
- 7+ years of progressive HR experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role
- Healthcare or non-profit experience strongly preferred
- SHRM-CP/SCP or PHR/SPHR certification strongly preferred
- Hands-on experience with payroll systems (ADP), HRIS platforms, and compensation analysis
- Strong working knowledge of employment law and regulatory compliance
- Enthusiastic team leader who creates a positive, dynamic work environment
- Excellent interpersonal, conflict-resolution, and communication skills
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, resource-conscious non-profit environment while balancing strategy and direct execution
- High proficiency with Microsoft 365
