Human Resources Assistant
Job Description
The Human Resources Assistant provides day-to-day administrative support for human resources functions and helps the HR Director and agency managers address HR-related needs. This onsite role in Vernon, CT supports recruiting activities, employee relations, recordkeeping, compliance, benefits coordination, and training and orientation preparation.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the efficient operation and ongoing development of the HR department.
- Assist the HR Director with recruiting, interviewing, and hiring activities.
- Help manage employee relations support and maintain accurate recordkeeping.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of HR tracking systems.
- Participate in company-wide committee facilitation and committee work.
- Support the development and coordination of employee safety and the safety program, including involvement with the Safety Committee.
- Maintain personnel files and ensure recordkeeping is completed for all employees.
- Assist with administration of the employee benefits program, including support during open enrollment.
- Communicate with insurance carriers as needed.
- Assist with Workers’ Compensation and Unemployment processes by coordinating with the state and carriers as needed.
- Support the HR Director in developing, coordinating, preparing, and conducting training and orientation programs with the Program Director and professional staff (as appropriate).
- Assist the HR Director with grievances and arbitration proceedings.
- Support oversight of compliance with the union contract.
- Assist with the staff evaluation process for all employees.
- Help ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and reporting requirements related to staffing.
- Assist in developing and maintaining personnel policies and ensuring compliance with those policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required or assigned.
Scope of Responsibility
The Human Resource Assistant is responsible for assisting with the administration of the day-to-day operations of human resources functions and duties. The role supports the accomplishment of HR practices and objectives by helping implement HR services, policies, and programs. The position reports to the HR Director and provides support to agency managers with HR issues.
Working Relationship
The Human Resource Assistant reports directly to the Human Resource Director and works to develop and maintain positive working relationships with administrators, assistant administrators, educational instructors, direct support service staff, main office administrative staff, and regulatory agencies.
Requirements
- Education: High School education required; Associates or Bachelors Degree preferred.
- Experience: One year of HR experience, including computers, filing, maintaining filing systems, organizing, and human resources practices is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Maturity and good judgment, with the ability to handle complex organizational relationships, community and regulatory relationships, and confidential matters.
- Ability to follow and implement Agency Policy and Procedure.
- Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
