Job Description

Based in Charleston, South Carolina and on-site with Landmark Construction, the Senior Human Resources Generalist will guide HR initiatives, employee relations, compliance, onboarding, and day-to-day HR operations across our projects. This role demands at least five years of progressive HR generalist experience, with a preference for backgrounds in construction or other safety-sensitive environments, and a bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field. The position collaborates closely with project leadership, recruiters, and field teams to ensure compliant, proactive people practices.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct workplace investigations (harassment, discrimination, misconduct) following established investigation protocols; document findings objectively and factually.
  • Advise supervisors and project managers on performance management, disciplinary action, and terminations in accordance with company policy and applicable law.
  • Serve as a point of contact for employee concerns and escalate as appropriate.
  • Maintain compliance with Title VII, ADA, FMLA, FCRA, FLSA, and South Carolina state employment law.
  • Own day-to-day I-9 and E-Verify compliance for all new hires; partner with the HR Generalist on findings from the annual I-9 self-audit.
  • Maintain accurate personnel, medical, and I-9 files in accordance with recordkeeping requirements.
  • Partner with the Recruiter on offer preparation, background check coordination, and new hire onboarding for craft/field and salaried positions.
  • Prepare adverse action documentation in accordance with FCRA and EEOC standards when required.
  • Coordinate pre-employment requirements specific to construction, including TWIC credentialing for port/waterfront sites where applicable.
  • Administer the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) program in full: eligibility determinations, designation notices, medical certification tracking, and return-to-work coordination.
  • Coordinate FMLA administration with the HR Generalist where leave intersects with benefits continuation (e.g., COBRA notices, premium payment tracking).
  • Respond to state unemployment claims and requests for separation information within required deadlines.
  • Represent the company at unemployment hearings and appeals as needed, coordinating with supervisors and project managers to gather separation documentation.
  • Monitor claim outcomes and charge notices; flag patterns or discrepancies affecting the company's unemployment tax rate to the HR Manager.
  • Maintain accurate employee data within Viewpoint (Trimble) HRIS/payroll system.
  • Generate reports supporting EEO tracking, headcount, turnover, and compliance audits.
  • Support development and maintenance of HR dashboards and tracking tools (e.g., EEO case tracking).
  • Assist in developing and updating HR policies, SOPs, and employee handbook content.
  • Develop and deliver training on topics such as harassment prevention, tailored to a heavy civil construction workforce.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of progressive HR generalist experience; construction, transportation, or other safety-sensitive industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of federal and South Carolina employment law (Title VII, FMLA, ADA, FCRA, FLSA).
  • Proficiency with HRIS platforms; Viewpoint (Trimble) experience a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate compliance requirements clearly to non-HR audiences.
  • Demonstrated discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
