Job Description

The Human Resources Advisor acts as the primary HR contact for a T&T Supermarket store in San Jose, CA, delivering comprehensive on-site HR support to store leadership and staff. The role encompasses employee relations, recruitment, compliance, performance management, training, and HR administration, with a focus on maintaining a compliant and positive work environment. The compensation range for this position is USD 70,310 to 80,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the initial contact for employee relations, guiding managers and staff on workplace concerns
  • Lead or support prompt, thorough, and unbiased investigations into complaints such as harassment, discrimination, or policy violations in coordination with Employee Relations, HR Leaders, or Legal
  • Provide management with recommendations based on investigation findings and relevant policies and laws
  • Collaborate with store leadership to resolve staff concerns and foster a constructive work environment
  • Support initiatives aimed at enhancing employee engagement and retention
  • Oversee full-cycle recruitment for hourly and exempt store roles, achieving the fulfillment targets
  • Partner with department managers to determine hiring needs and create staffing plans
  • Coordinate a smooth onboarding process, including new hire orientation that complies with federal, state, and local requirements
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant personnel records
  • Coach managers on performance management practices, including recognition, disciplinary actions, documentation, and terminations
  • Review corrective actions for consistency, fairness, and legal compliance
  • Support development planning and talent pipeline efforts at the store level
  • Ensure adherence to applicable federal, state, and local employment laws, including California wage and hour, meal and rest breaks, and leave requirements
  • Interpret and apply company policies to ensure consistent and compliant implementation
  • Collaborate with corporate HR, Legal, or Compliance on audits, investigations, and regulatory matters
  • Assist with the administration of employee benefits and respond to inquiries
  • Coordinate with payroll to ensure accurate timekeeping and wage compliance, including meal and rest break adherence
  • Administer leaves of absence (FMLA, CFRA, PDL, and other applicable leaves) in line with legal requirements and company policy, including tracking and communication
  • Manage Workers’ Compensation cases for the store, including timely injury reporting and claim follow-up
  • Serve as the primary contact for WC claims with employees, managers, and the Safety and WC team
  • Maintain compliance with state reporting and documentation standards
  • Monitor claim statuses and proactively follow through on open cases to ensure timely resolution
  • Coordinate return-to-work and modified duty arrangements in alignment with medical guidance and company policy
  • Maintain a regular presence on the retail floor and back-of-house areas to engage with staff and managers
  • Proactively observe operations to identify safety risks, policy violations, and compliance concerns
  • Address issues directly or escalate as appropriate to ensure a safe and compliant work environment
  • Support workplace safety initiatives with operations and safety teams to minimize injury risks
  • Maintain accurate records of workplace incidents, claims, and outcomes
  • Deliver required training, including California-mandated harassment prevention and workplace violence prevention training as applicable
  • Identify training needs proactively and coordinate development opportunities with the Learning & Development team
  • Promote a culture of compliance and continuous learning
  • Maintain accurate HRIS and employee records in line with company standards and legal requirements
  • Prepare and analyze HR metrics such as turnover and headcount for store leadership and corporate HR
  • Support assigned HR projects and initiatives as needed

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or Business Administration from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive, hands-on HR experience in California, within chain retail stores, supermarkets, restaurants, manufacturing, warehouse, or other high-volume hourly environments
  • Strong knowledge of current Federal, California, and local employment laws, including wage and hour, meal and rest breaks, and leave requirements
  • Ability to interpret policies and apply employment laws to workplace situations with sound judgment
  • Proven ability to operate independently as the primary HR resource at a store, exercising discretion and independent judgment while leading and managing all HR matters and identifying risks early
  • Experience supporting a non-union workforce and maintaining a positive work environment without representation
  • Hands-on experience managing Workers’ Compensation cases, including reporting, follow-up, and return-to-work coordination
  • Self-starter with ownership mindset and a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, and written and verbal communication skills
  • High integrity with the ability to handle confidential information discreetly
  • Proficiency with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook)

Shift

Five day work week, typically Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm; hours may vary slightly by department due to operational needs
