Job Description

Elmwood Village Charter Schools in Buffalo, NY is seeking an experienced Human Resources Generalist to orchestrate recruitment, onboarding, benefits administration, compliance, and employee relations. Reporting to the Director of Operations and overseeing the Payroll Specialist and HR Assistant, this onsite role focuses on maintaining accurate personnel records while fostering a collaborative, mission-driven work environment. A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field and a minimum of three years of HR experience are required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead full-cycle recruitment for instructional, administrative, and support staff, including job postings, resume screening, interview coordination, offer management, and welcoming new hires to EVCS culture.
  • Collaborate with leaders and hiring managers to identify staffing needs and talent gaps.
  • Steer the onboarding process, ensuring completion of required documents, trainings, and NYSED background checks/fingerprinting clearance.
  • Conduct new hire orientations to introduce EVCS culture, policies, and benefits.
  • Coordinate open enrollment and administer benefits programs such as health, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement plans, with coordination to NYSTRS when applicable.
  • Assist employees with benefits inquiries, open enrollment periods, form completion, and life event changes.
  • Oversee payroll processing, including accurate time tracking, leaves of absence, PTO, deductions, and salary adjustments.
  • Maintain meticulous, confidential personnel files in compliance with applicable laws and charter requirements.
  • Track and audit certifications, licenses, and continuing education credits to meet New York State teaching requirements.
  • Assist with annual reporting requirements such as BEDS data, EEO-1, and OSHA logs.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for employee inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and workplace concerns.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive school culture aligned with EVCS values of community, collaboration, and social justice.
  • Support leadership with the annual performance evaluation process and organize required trainings (e.g., Title IX, Sexual Harassment, Workplace Violence/Safety).
  • Investigate policy violations, grievances, or complaints in line with EVCS policies and applicable laws.
  • Assist managers with consistent application of corrective and disciplinary actions.
  • Serve as Civil Rights Compliance Officer (CRCO) and Title IX Coordinator.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel to maintain the employee handbook annually and act as the primary liaison on personnel matters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field.
  • PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certification highly preferred.
  • 3-5 years of progressive HR experience, preferably in a K-12 education setting, charter school, or nonprofit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and New York State labor laws (FMLA, PFL, ADA, Workers' Comp) and Title IX.
  • Proficiency with HRIS platforms, applicant tracking systems, payroll systems, and Microsoft Office Suite / Google Workspace.
  • Discretion and trust to handle highly sensitive information with integrity.
  • Collaborative mindset with strong interpersonal skills for a team-oriented school environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

  • Resilience and a proactive, can-do attitude suitable for a fast-paced school setting.
