Job Description

Autonomous bilingual HR Generalist to manage the internal HR function for Century Mechanical Contractors, Inc. and support 180 employees across office and field operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate as the internal HR department of one and serve as the primary HR contact for 180 employees, including field staff.
  • Own all daily HR workflows and support other functions as needed.
  • Ensure strict legal compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
  • Support field personnel and bridge communication between the office and field.

Requirements

  • Language: Fluent bilingual in English and Spanish (REQUIRED).
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years as an HR Generalist, preferably in a standalone or small-team environment.
  • Industry: Experience in construction, mechanical contracting, or similar field-based industries is highly preferred.
  • Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources OR a SHRM/HRCI certification.
  • Software: Proficiency with HRMS/HRIS systems and Microsoft Office; experience with Sage HRMS or Sage 300 CRE is a major plus.
  • Autonomy: Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and make sound decisions without daily HR oversight.
  • Communication: Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to connect effectively with both executive leadership and field personnel.

Position Overview

  • Century Mechanical Contractors, Inc. seeks an autonomous, bilingual HR Generalist to manage our HR function as an internal department of one. You will be the primary HR contact for 180 employees, with most teammates working on field jobsites.
  • Reporting to the Office Manager, this mid-career role suits a self-motivated professional who works independently and bridges communication between the office and the field.

Talent Management & Onboarding

  • Support performance management processes, including tracking reviews and providing documentation guidance.
  • Own and conduct weekly new hire onboarding and orientation to ensure a positive, compliant experience as needed.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Legal Compliance: Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (FMLA, ADA, FLSA, etc.).
  • Records & Reporting: Maintain accurate personnel files, training logs, and HRMS records; run quarterly attrition reports.
  • Trade Programs: Manage licenses, required safety training, and the apprenticeship program, including recordkeeping and course enrollment.
  • Claims Management: Own workers’ compensation claims in coordination with the Safety Manager; manage unemployment claims.
  • Investigations: Initiate and conduct thorough, confidential investigations upon receiving employee complaints.

Employee Relations & Field Support

  • Field Workforce Liaison: Primary point of contact for employee questions for a highly remote workforce.
  • Manager Advisory: Guide field superintendents and managers through employee relations issues, disciplinary actions, and proper documentation.
  • Leave Management: Administer LOA / FMLA requests and coordinate employee disability and life insurance claims.
  • Feedback Loops: Conduct exit interviews and present quarterly feedback to leadership regarding attrition types and root causes.
  • Culture & Engagement: Manage the Employee of the Month program and present updates at Quarterly Supervision Meetings.

Benefits Support & Payroll Partnership

  • Bilingual Benefits Support: Cross-train in benefits to assist Spanish-speaking field employees with enrollment questions and navigate plan choices.
  • Open Enrollment Collaboration: Partner with the Payroll/Benefits Specialist to coordinate and execute annual open enrollment.
  • Payroll Backup: Cross-train to learn and serve as the secondary backup for weekly job-cost payroll processing when needed.
  • Data Changes: Process all promotions, demotions, pay rate changes, and terminations within the HRMS.
  • Administrative Ownership: Complete verifications of employment (VOE) and provide job references for former employees.
