Job Description

Join the Howard County Public School System as an Administrative Secretary in Human Resources, where you’ll provide essential administrative support and responsive front-line service to the HR team. This role centers on onboarding, recruitment, background checks, and handling inquiries from employees and applicants, all from a remote-friendly location in Howard County, MD.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary contact for HR inquiries received by phone and the HR inbox, delivering friendly and professional assistance to employees and candidates.
  • Assist with onboarding and orientation logistics, including scheduling, to create a welcoming and organized experience for new hires.
  • Address employee questions related to HR policies, benefits, and procedures, and route complex issues to the appropriate HR staff.
  • Coordinate with a third-party vendor to ensure new hires complete fingerprinting requirements.
  • Support the administration of the MD486 background check process for new employees.
  • Collaborate with Equifax to handle employment verification requests.
  • Assist with planning and coordinating employee engagement initiatives and events.
  • Assist with the review of employment applications.
  • Support recruitment activities and participation in hiring fairs and events.

Requirements

  • Education: High School diploma or GED
  • Experience: Five years of experience performing clerical or administrative support duties

Telework Program

This position is eligible to participate after the first 120 working days of employment. Telework schedules will be subject to approval and determined by the department and/or supervisor.

Retirement

Membership in the Maryland State Retirement Agency (MSRA) pension plan is a mandatory condition of employment for eligible staff. The annual pension contribution is 7% of the employee’s annual salary.
