The Human Resources Generalist at the Montclair YMCA serves as a key HR partner onsite in Montclair, NJ, overseeing HRIS management, benefits administration, compliance, and full cycle recruitment across multiple locations. The role emphasizes employee relations, engagement, and alignment with YMCA values.

Overview

The Human Resources Generalist is a pivotal HR partner for the YMCA of Montclair, a non profit organization focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This position manages day to day HRIS operations, benefits administration, HR compliance, and full cycle recruitment across locations, contributing to employee relations, engagement, and HR operations in a mission driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the main point of contact for employees regarding benefits, HR policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee HRIS and personnel records, including hires, changes, and terminations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and confidentiality.
  • Coordinate benefits administration, including enrollments, changes, open enrollment, COBRA tracking, and vendor liaison.
  • Support end to end recruitment, including job descriptions, postings, offers, and onboarding, working with hiring managers and the CHRO.
  • Prepare and maintain required HR reports and metrics such as headcount, EEOC, OSHA, DOL, and unemployment data.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and New Jersey employment laws including EEOC, FMLA, ADA, wage and hour, and OSHA.
  • Handle leaves, workers' compensation, accommodations, and unemployment or DOL claims with professionalism and empathy.
  • Support employee engagement efforts, performance reviews, and career development aligned with YMCA values.
  • Support Abuse Risk Management and risk and safety policies through training, feedback, and timely response to concerns.
  • Collaborate across departments and assist with special HR projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
  • 3–5 years of HR experience in an HR Generalist or similar role with broad exposure to benefits administration and open enrollment.
  • 3–5 years of HR Generalist experience with broad exposure to recruiting, talent acquisition, and onboarding.
  • 3–5 years of HR Generalist experience with broad exposure to HRIS and data management.
  • 3–5 years of HR Generalist experience with broad exposure to HR compliance and employment law.
  • Basic understanding of compensation and pay practices.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with HRIS platforms; ADP Workforce Now strongly preferred.
  • Solid understanding of New Jersey employment law and HR best practices.
  • Strong organizational, time management, attention to detail, problem solving, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, reliability, and trustworthiness.
  • Flexible and adaptable in a fast paced, mission driven environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; ability to travel locally up to 20% of the time.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.

Compensation

Annual salary of USD 60,000 to 65,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Work Environment and Travel

Primarily office based with extensive computer and phone use. Local travel between YMCA of Montclair locations within the service area. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds. Reasonable accommodations available for applicants with disabilities.
