Human Resources Generalist
Job Description
The HR Generalist provides essential day-to-day human resources support for a mission-driven nonprofit. Based onsite in Bloomfield, CT, the role covers employee relations, leave management, benefits, recruitment and onboarding, and HR operations, with regular travel across the state.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted resource for employees and managers, fostering a respectful, inclusive culture aligned with the organization's values.
- Handle employee relations matters, including investigations, conflict resolution, and recommendations.
- Guide supervisors on performance management, engagement, and disciplinary actions.
- Conduct exit and stay interviews to identify trends that inform retention and workplace culture improvements.
- Oversee all leave processes, including FMLA, ADA accommodations, and other leave policies relevant to state and nonprofit contexts.
- Act as the primary contact for employees navigating leave, ensuring timely and compassionate communication.
- Maintain precise records and tracking of all leave requests.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state employment laws including FMLA, ADA, FLSA, EEO, ACA, and ERISA.
- Collaborate with leadership on return-to-work plans and reasonable accommodations.
- Support the administration of benefits programs such as health, dental, and wellness benefits.
- Assist with open enrollment, benefits education, and communications tailored to a nonprofit workforce.
- Respond to inquiries about benefits eligibility and coverage.

- Coordinate with brokers and vendors to provide cost-effective, competitive benefits offerings.
- Manage pre-employment activities including background checks, reference verifications, and new hire documentation.
- Maintain HRIS data, employee files, and required compliance reporting.
- Assist in developing and implementing HR policies, procedures, and training programs.
- Provide guidance on HR policies, benefits, payroll, and workplace practices.
- Support organizational initiatives that enhance employee engagement and align with the nonprofit mission.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of HR experience in a generalist or similar role, preferably within a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
- Ability and willingness to travel within the state for meetings, trainings, and in-person support to assigned entities.
