This onsite Human Resources Coordinator role in Portsmouth, NH supports day-to-day people operations while helping create clear, consistent HR practices for a positive and equitable workplace culture.

What You’ll Do

Reporting to the Director of Staffing, the Human Resources Coordinator provides hands-on HR coverage with a focus on HR compliance and risk management and thoughtful, efficient recruiting and onboarding. This role serves as a primary point of contact for employee questions and helps guide leaders with employee relations documentation and corrective action tracking.

Own HR compliance and risk management umbrella and support consistent application of HR policies, procedures, and employee handbook guidelines.
Assist with federal and state labor law compliance and track required documentation to support audits, inspections, and documentation requests.
Support benefits administration and assist with training tracking.
Be the primary point of contact for staff to raise HR-related issues or concerns.
Serve as a first point of contact for employee questions related to HR policies, benefits, time off, and employment practices.
Provide best-practice guidance to directors and supervisors on employee relations documentation and corrective action tracking.
Participate in conflict resolution meetings and provide guidance to directors.
Support routine issue resolution by providing guidance and escalating concerns appropriately while promoting fair, consistent, and respectful workplace practices.
Own the tactical side of recruiting, including community outreach, circulating recruitment materials, and building partnerships with local colleges and organizations.
Steward the interview process end to end, with an emphasis on moving candidates through quickly and thoughtfully.
Design and implement onboarding processes, and post job openings, review resumes, coordinate interviews, and conduct initial screenings.
Attend job fairs and hiring events, and manage background and reference checks.
Partner with the Director of Staffing to ensure recruiting and onboarding align with the organization’s staffing model.

What You Bring

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
2–4 years of experience in an HR, administrative, or people-operations role.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Working knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Job Description

Part-time director overseeing finance and human resources based in Portsmouth, NH, approximately 25 hours per week.

Responsibilities

Oversee all financial operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and general ledger, ensuring accuracy and GAAP compliance.
Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with the Executive Director; monitor progress and provide regular updates to leadership.
Manage cash flow, forecasting, and relationships with banking partners.
Track grant expenditures, ensure restricted funding compliance, and produce financial reporting for donors.
Coordinate the annual audit and collaborate with auditors to prepare IRS Form 990.
Direct the renewal of all company insurance policies (health, dental, vision, short-term disability, general liability, property, workers' compensation) and maintain records of policies, contracts, and legal agreements.
Prepare financial reports and analyses for the Finance Committee and Board, including quarterly updates on Gather’s 1816 Legacy Endowment.
Supervise HR and Admin Manager in administering employee benefits (health, dental, vision, 401k) and payroll, while maintaining accurate HR records.
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal labor laws in partnership with HR and payroll providers.
Oversee recruitment and onboarding processes.
Serve as the senior HR contact to support a positive and inclusive work culture.
Partner with the Executive Director and Board to shape organizational strategy and align financial planning with the nonprofit’s mission and long-term goals; provide strategic financial insight and scenario analysis for major decisions.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred.
5-10 years of progressive experience in Finance and HR, with at least 3 years in a management role; nonprofit sector preferred.
Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks, bill.com), database systems (Salesforce), Microsoft Office Suite, and payroll platforms (Paychex).
Strong understanding of fund accounting, grant compliance, and nonprofit regulatory requirements.
High ethical standards, hands-on management style, strong interpersonal skills, meticulous attention to detail, and ability to translate complex financial data for non-finance staff.
