Director of Finance and Human Resources
Job Description
Part-time director overseeing finance and human resources based in Portsmouth, NH, approximately 25 hours per week.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all financial operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and general ledger, ensuring accuracy and GAAP compliance.
- Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with the Executive Director; monitor progress and provide regular updates to leadership.
- Manage cash flow, forecasting, and relationships with banking partners.
- Track grant expenditures, ensure restricted funding compliance, and produce financial reporting for donors.
- Coordinate the annual audit and collaborate with auditors to prepare IRS Form 990.
- Direct the renewal of all company insurance policies (health, dental, vision, short-term disability, general liability, property, workers' compensation) and maintain records of policies, contracts, and legal agreements.
- Prepare financial reports and analyses for the Finance Committee and Board, including quarterly updates on Gather’s 1816 Legacy Endowment.
- Supervise HR and Admin Manager in administering employee benefits (health, dental, vision, 401k) and payroll, while maintaining accurate HR records.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal labor laws in partnership with HR and payroll providers.
- Oversee recruitment and onboarding processes.
- Serve as the senior HR contact to support a positive and inclusive work culture.
- Partner with the Executive Director and Board to shape organizational strategy and align financial planning with the nonprofit’s mission and long-term goals; provide strategic financial insight and scenario analysis for major decisions.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred.
- 5-10 years of progressive experience in Finance and HR, with at least 3 years in a management role; nonprofit sector preferred.
- Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks, bill.com), database systems (Salesforce), Microsoft Office Suite, and payroll platforms (Paychex).
- Strong understanding of fund accounting, grant compliance, and nonprofit regulatory requirements.
- High ethical standards, hands-on management style, strong interpersonal skills, meticulous attention to detail, and ability to translate complex financial data for non-finance staff.

Compensation
- Salary range: USD 50,000 to 60,000 per year.
- Part-time status; optional 401(k) participation with up to a 4% match and immediate vesting; paid holidays that align with scheduled workdays.
- Not eligible for health or dental insurance or other paid time off due to part-time status.
