This onsite Human Resources Coordinator role in Portsmouth, NH supports day-to-day people operations while helping create clear, consistent HR practices for a positive and equitable workplace culture.
What You’ll Do
Reporting to the Director of Staffing, the Human Resources Coordinator provides hands-on HR coverage with a focus on HR compliance and risk management and thoughtful, efficient recruiting and onboarding. This role serves as a primary point of contact for employee questions and helps guide leaders with employee relations documentation and corrective action tracking.
- Own HR compliance and risk management umbrella and support consistent application of HR policies, procedures, and employee handbook guidelines.
- Assist with federal and state labor law compliance and track required documentation to support audits, inspections, and documentation requests.
- Support benefits administration and assist with training tracking.
- Be the primary point of contact for staff to raise HR-related issues or concerns.
- Serve as a first point of contact for employee questions related to HR policies, benefits, time off, and employment practices.
- Provide best-practice guidance to directors and supervisors on employee relations documentation and corrective action tracking.
- Participate in conflict resolution meetings and provide guidance to directors.
- Support routine issue resolution by providing guidance and escalating concerns appropriately while promoting fair, consistent, and respectful workplace practices.
- Own the tactical side of recruiting, including community outreach, circulating recruitment materials, and building partnerships with local colleges and organizations.
- Steward the interview process end to end, with an emphasis on moving candidates through quickly and thoughtfully.
- Design and implement onboarding processes, and post job openings, review resumes, coordinate interviews, and conduct initial screenings.
- Attend job fairs and hiring events, and manage background and reference checks.
- Partner with the Director of Staffing to ensure recruiting and onboarding align with the organization’s staffing model.
What You Bring
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 2–4 years of experience in an HR, administrative, or people-operations role.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Working knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to Haves
- Experience in a nonprofit, child care, education, or human services environment.
- Experience supporting hourly staff and multi-site operations.

- HR certification (SHRM-CP, PHR, or similar).
