Job Description

The City of Houston, TX offers a role built around support and service during one of the most difficult times employees and their families can face. In this onsite position, you will help ensure bereavement processes move smoothly by connecting people with the right resources, coordinating required documentation, and facilitating access to benefits and counseling support through the appropriate City channels.

What You’ll Do

  • Act as a liaison for employees, retirees, and/or surviving family members by providing information and coordination for the final paycheck process and City benefits, including life insurance, workers’ compensation, health, dental, and vision.
  • Support referrals to relevant services such as EAP, pension, and deferred compensation, and provide on-call, 24-hour resource information as needed.
  • Facilitate the completion and processing of required documents tied to final pay, workers’ compensation, life insurance, and other related benefits.
  • Maintain records and systems to track activities, disseminate information, and monitor referrals, transactions, requests, and concerns.
  • Investigate and resolve special issues connected to final paycheck and City benefits processes, including life insurance and workers’ compensation.
  • Network and coordinate with representatives from payroll, benefits, EAP, legal, deferred compensation, pension, and/or social services to align available services and supports for beneficiaries and family members.
  • Create, update, and revise documents, handouts, and informational packets to keep guidance accurate and current.
  • Coordinate grief counseling sessions with EAP in response to crisis events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Psychology, Sociology, Business Administration, Liberal Arts, or a related field.
  • Four years of professional administrative or customer service experience.
  • Professional administrative and/or human resources experience (or a combination) may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferences

  • Preference will be given to candidates who are a Certified Grief Educator.
  • Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants who possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position, and who are among the most qualified candidates for the position, with selection factors applied in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

Work Location and Working Conditions

  • Houston, TX (onsite)
  • Essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature, and air conditions

Compensation and Process

  • Salary: USD 5,436 - 7,538 per monthly
  • Pay Grade: 24
