Job Description

Amarillo College seeks a capable Human Resources Generalist to serve as the main HR liaison for assigned departments, overseeing the employee lifecycle and offering advisory support to supervisors and staff under the HRBP model.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary HR contact for designated departments and employees across the full employee lifecycle.
  • Foster strong partnerships with supervisors and staff to deliver proactive HR guidance and support.
  • Advise leadership on workforce planning, organizational needs, staffing strategies, retention, and succession planning.
  • Provide prompt, professional responses to inquiries, coordinating specialized assistance when necessary.
  • Collaborate with HR specialists and Centers of Excellence to ensure seamless service delivery and issue resolution.
  • Departments may rotate periodically to enable cross-training, continuity of service, and institutional knowledge retention.
  • Work with supervisors to assess staffing needs, position changes, funding sources, classifications, compensation alignment, and job description updates.
  • Coordinate with Talent Acquisition on recruitment strategies, timelines, candidate experience, and onboarding transitions.
  • Offer hiring guidance to supervisors, including interview support, recommendations, and policy interpretation.
  • Partner with Total Rewards leadership on compensation reviews, stipends, classifications, and salary matters.
  • Oversee onboarding activities after candidate acceptance to ensure a smooth handoff from Talent Acquisition to HR Generalist support.
  • Complete onboarding steps including documentation, I-9 verification, W-4 and direct deposit setup, HRIS entries, and personnel action processing.
  • Coordinate onboarding plans with supervisors to promote early engagement and success for new hires.
  • Provide benefits overview, handbook review, workplace expectations, and policy guidance to new employees.
  • Coordinate with Financial Aid, Payroll, Employer Relations, and the Business Office for Federal Work-Study setup and compliance.
  • Coach on workplace conduct, policy interpretation, corrective action, performance expectations, and employee concerns.
  • Support investigations, conflict resolution, coaching conversations, documentation, and performance management under HR leadership.
  • Assist supervisors with retention efforts, engagement concerns, and workplace climate matters.
  • Promote consistent and fair application of institutional policies and procedures.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for questions about compensation, benefits, retirement, leave, accommodations, and policy interpretation.
  • Provide guidance on insurance, retirement programs (TRS/ORP), leave programs, and workplace policies.
  • Coordinate ADA accommodation requests and facilitate the interactive process as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the Employee Health Liaison on FMLA, Workers’ Compensation, Sick Leave Pool, medical certifications, and return-to-work restrictions.
  • Escalate complex benefits, compensation, payroll, or leave matters to the appropriate HR specialist while maintaining ownership of communication with employees.
  • Process personnel actions in the HRIS, including hires, promotions, transfers, salary adjustments, reclassifications, funding changes, terminations, and status changes.
  • Maintain confidential employee records in compliance with applicable laws and institutional requirements.
  • Coordinate payroll related transactions such as stipends, overloads, faculty pay, vacation payouts, and pay changes.
  • Ensure accuracy of organizational and employee data within HR systems.
  • Identify HR training needs and collaborate with Organizational Development on departmental training and leadership development opportunities.
  • Support employee engagement, retention, and organizational culture initiatives.
  • Participate in HR process improvement, digitization, workflow optimization, and service enhancement initiatives.
  • Attend professional development events to stay current on employment law, HR trends, and best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business, or a closely related field.
  • Two or more years of experience in Human Resources.
  • Alternate combinations of experience and education may satisfy the requirement.

  • Knowledge of federal and state employment regulations and higher education HR practices.
  • Working understanding of benefits, payroll, compensation, retirement systems (TRS/ORP), and HRIS functionality.
  • Ability to coach supervisors, resolve employee relations concerns, and uphold fairness and consistency.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build trust and credibility.
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities for data reporting and process improvement.
  • Capacity to manage confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, HRIS platforms (Colleague, NEOED), and digital workflow tools.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Compensation policy notes: starting offers typically fall between the minimum and midpoint of the pay grade, with occasional movement toward the maximum to support long-term growth.
  • Pay grade: 12; salary determined by Human Resources based on education, experience, and internal comparisons.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent travel between offices and buildings; ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and maneuver typical office items up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Flexible schedule may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and events as needed.

Work Environment

  • Professional office setting with standard equipment; high traffic area with regular interruptions; some work may occur outside the office with minimal supervision.
