Job Description
Part-time Human Resources Generalist at Garfield YMCA, onsite in Garfield, NJ, focusing on HRIS management, compliance, and recruitment under the CEO's direction.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary contact for employee inquiries about benefits, HR policies, and procedures.
- Collaborate with hiring managers to revise job requirements and descriptions for every position.
- Lead New Hire Orientation sessions.
- Promote employee engagement and retention by developing initiatives that strengthen workplace culture and organizational trust.
- Address employee concerns, resolve conflicts, and foster a positive, inclusive work environment.
- Monitor HR metrics, analyze trends, and recommend programs to improve performance and the employee experience.
- Maintain employee records and audit trails in line with company and regulatory requirements.
- Manage leave of absence, workers’ compensation cases, and accommodations with professionalism and empathy.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with all internal departments.
- Ensure compliance with applicable employment laws and regulations.
- Stay current on HR best practices and industry trends.
- Attend Abuse Risk Management training and follow procedures for high-risk activities and supervision of members and participants.
- Screen employees and volunteers for abuse risk using established tools and provide ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk.
- Provide regular feedback on boundaries with consumers to employees and volunteers and ensure adherence to abuse risk policies and procedures.
- Respond promptly to policy and procedure violations using YMCA disciplinary procedures; handle reports of suspicious or inappropriate behavior confidentially and follow mandated reporting.
- Communicate the YMCA's commitment to protecting members from abuse to all staff and volunteers.
- Support assigned special projects as needed.
Requirements
- Some college preferred.
- 2 to 5 years of HR experience with broad exposure to benefits, compensation, recruiting, compliance, and employment law.
- Approachable, collaborative, and influential partner who can engage employees at all levels.
- Flexibility to adapt in a changing environment.
- Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Solid organizational, time management, attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical abilities; capable of planning, organizing, implementing projects, and following up.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Professionalism, integrity, dependability, and trustworthiness.
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Understanding of New Jersey employment law.
- Ability to travel locally up to 20% of the time.
- Onsite work 3-4 days per week; schedule may fluctuate; at least one Saturday per month required.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification or obtain within 90 days of employment.

Compensation and Location
Hourly pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
