Human Resources Manager - Senior
Job Description
Senior human resources leadership across James River Carriers, overseeing HR functions for roughly 140 employees in Richmond, VA (onsite).
Responsibilities
- Act as the primary HR contact for staff and management.
- Offer guidance on employee relations, coaching, performance management, disciplinary actions, and conflict resolution.
- Cultivate a positive, respectful, and engaged work environment.
- Lead recruitment for office-based roles.
- Schedule and manage interviews, onboarding, orientation, and integration for office personnel.
- Oversee onboarding for driver personnel to ensure smooth integration.
- Develop strategies to enhance recruiting and improve employee retention.
- Manage the performance review process.
- Support supervisors with employee development, goal setting, coaching, and documentation.
- Drive continuous improvement and accountability across the organization.
- Administer comprehensive benefits programs including health insurance, retirement plans, life and disability coverage, flexible spending accounts, and paid time off.
- Coordinate annual open enrollment and benefits communications.
- Maintain accurate HR records and personnel files.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local employment laws.
- Keep the employee handbook, policies, and procedures up to date.
- Manage unemployment claims, leave administration, and related documentation.
- Collaborate with payroll to ensure wage and hour compliance.
- Oversee and administer the weekly payroll process.
- Reconcile and administer health and welfare benefits, garnishments, and other deductions.
- Track and report HR metrics such as turnover, attendance, hiring, retention, and benefits participation.
- Develop and manage the HR budget.
- Propose enhancements to HR programs, policies, and processes.
- Collaborate with the CEO to align HR initiatives with organizational goals and business initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Five or more years of progressive HR experience.
- Strong knowledge of employment law and HR best practices.
- Experience handling employee relations and performance management.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
- High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and HRIS/payroll systems.
- Experience in Human Resources: 2 years (Required).
