Job Description

Hy-Vee Inc is seeking an Assistant Human Resources Manager to support operations at the Chariton Distribution Center. This onsite role centers on payroll, benefits administration, event planning, and employee relations, and functions as the HR Manager in their absence while supervising the HR staff.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the deputy to the Human Resource Manager and leads the HR team at the Chariton Distribution Center.
  • Prepares payroll, completes reports, transmits information, and processes expense checks.
  • Leads payroll, benefits administration, and event planning initiatives.
  • Investigates payroll discrepancies and missed punches.
  • Oversees training and performance management of Payroll Coordinators.
  • Contributes to performance appraisals and disciplinary actions for HR staff in payroll, benefits administration, and event planning.
  • Conducts employee concerns investigations and supports resolution efforts.
  • Dra fts responses to unemployment claims and represents the company in hearings.
  • Collaborates with management on various projects.
  • Works with the Manager of HR to maximize use of all available 260E funds at the distribution center.
  • Oversees monthly reporting on turnover, safety, recruitment, exit interviews, and payroll.
  • Calculates holiday double time and overtime rates for bargaining unit employees across six holidays per year, typically spanning about ten weeks annually.
  • Compiles monthly and quarterly incentive calculations and reports wages to West Des Moines for profit/bonus reporting.
  • Plays a key role in drafting and implementing process improvements and standard operating procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • One to three years of similar or related work experience.

Secondary duties and responsibilities

  • Assists with planning and organizing Hy-Vee functions.
  • Serves as backup to HR Coordinators in payroll, benefits administration, and event planning.
  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • One to three years of similar or related work experience.

Supervisory responsibilities (Direct Reports)

  • Assigns work to others and coordinates with warehouse managers to resolve problems.
  • Demonstrates independent judgment and decision-making skills essential to the role.
  • Provides guidance, supervision, and training to Payroll Coordinators.

Physical requirements

  • Ability to perform light work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Visual requirements include near and far vision with or without correction, depth perception, field of vision, and color vision.
  • Physical activities include stooping, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, fingering, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working conditions

The role is based in an office environment. Occasional travel to warehouses is required where dust, dirt, noise, and hazards may be present. The position often involves handling multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
