Human Resources Assistant
Job Description
Brooklyn House is seeking a Human Resources Assistant to support day-to-day operations within the Human Resources department. This onsite role in Brooklyn, NY focuses on administrative and operational support that helps keep recruitment, onboarding, records management, compliance tasks, and HR coordination running smoothly.
In this position, you will help manage essential HR workflows, maintain accurate employee documentation, and assist with key functions across payroll administration and benefits coordination.
Role overview
The Human Resources Assistant provides support to ensure efficient execution of daily HR functions. The position supports recruitment and onboarding processes, maintains employee records, helps coordinate compliance-related items, assists with payroll administration, and contributes to benefits and other HR initiatives.
Key responsibilities
- Assist with recruitment activities, including posting job openings, scheduling interviews, and communicating with applicants.
- Prepare offer letters, onboarding documents, and new hire packets.
- Coordinate pre-employment requirements such as background checks, employment verifications, reference checks, drug screenings, and required clearances.
- Support new hire onboarding by collecting and maintaining required employment documentation accurately.
- Maintain confidential employee personnel files in both electronic and physical formats.
- Keep HR records, files, and documentation systems organized across electronic and physical locations.
- Assist with Form I-9 completion and employment eligibility verification while ensuring compliance with federal regulations.
- Process employee status changes, including new hires, promotions, transfers, and separations.
- Support payroll processing by maintaining employee records, collecting payroll documentation, and addressing routine payroll inquiries.
- Assist with employee benefits administration, including enrollment, qualifying life events, and employee questions.
- Monitor employee certifications, licenses, trainings, and required compliance documentation.
- Respond to employee inquiries regarding HR policies, procedures, and employment-related matters.
- Prepare HR reports, correspondence, and other administrative documents.
- Maintain HR filing systems and assist with audits to support compliance with company policies and applicable employment laws.
- Support employee engagement activities, orientations, training sessions, and other HR initiatives.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Required and preferred qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (preferred)
- Minimum 1-3 years of Human Resources or administrative experience (preferred), including support for recruitment, onboarding, payroll, employee records, or HR operations
- Experience with HRIS and payroll systems (preferred)
