Job Description
Motion Picture Industry Pension & Health Plans (MPI) has an immediate opening for a hands-on Human Resources/Labor Relations Manager to support employee and labor relations across the organization. This role works onsite in Studio City, CA, partnering closely with HR and cross-functional stakeholders on performance management, training initiatives, HR analytics, and related people operations work.
Role overview
In this position, you will serve as a key point of contact for employee concerns and labor relations intake, support performance management activities, and contribute to policy, plan, and reporting deliverables. You will also help evaluate labor negotiation impacts using HR data and compensation best practices, while ensuring compliance with applicable employment and labor requirements.
Responsibilities
- Handle routine labor relations and HR inquiries tied to policies, procedures, and bargaining agreements; escalate complex issues to appropriate management staff.
- Act as an initial intake and assessment liaison for employee complaints.
- Conduct initial interviews and gather information for employee relations matters such as harassment allegations, work-related complaints, or other concerns, and coordinate when additional investigation is required.
- Co-manage performance management activities, including annual evaluations and corrective action.
- Maintain current knowledge of laws and regulations impacting EEO, collective bargaining, unions, labor relations, and HR practices.
- Assist with preparation of plans, policies, documents, and reporting including EEO-1, organizational charts, labor agreements, and employee handbooks.
- Co-develop and facilitate leadership and management training tracks.
- Collect data to evaluate cost and policy implications of negotiations and disputes, including management and union proposals, pay scales and wages, benefits, working conditions, and other relevant circumstances.
- Conduct surveys, interviews, and other research related to HR policies, compensation, and labor negotiations, and report findings.
- Assist with documents and records needed for contract negotiations, meetings, notifications, and negotiations with employee and labor organizations.
- Apply compensation best practices to manage benchmarking of compensation ranges, balancing external market pricing with internal equity and ensuring compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
- Create, prepare, update, and maintain HR reports to analyze, report, and manage data.
- Work cross-functionally with HR Generalists and Talent Acquisition Specialists.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Business, Organizational Development, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Human Resources/Labor Relations Manager, senior-level HR generalist, or business partner in California, including people management or supervisory experience.
- Thorough understanding of state (CA/NY) and federal employment laws, regulations, and guidelines related to HR, labor relations, contract negotiations, and leave management, including FMLA, CFRA, FLSA, ADA, OSHA, and EEOC.
- HR certification such as SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP or PHR/SPHR preferred.
- Experience developing management training content using current instructional design tools, engaging adult learning methods, and strong facilitation skills.
- Strong technical skills and familiarity with HR Analytics, HRIS, and ATS systems.
- Ceridian Dayforce and Salary.com compensation tools experience preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, including grammar and spelling.
- Strong interpersonal skills, negotiation ability, and conflict resolution experience.
- Experience supervising, managing, developing, and leading HR staff.
- Excellent time management with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite, including intermediate Excel, PowerPoint, and Word skills (advanced skills a plus).
- Ability to identify issues early and proactively recommend resolution plans.
- High level of customer service, diplomacy, and ability to maintain professional relationships within MPI and with third-party vendors.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical rigor.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Excellent attendance and reliability, with ability to work extended hours as needed.
- Ability to handle confidential information professionally and with discretion, demonstrating sound judgment.

Compensation and location

- Salary: USD 135,000 - 160,000 per year
