Unit Human Resources Administrator I
Job Description
Michigan State University is seeking a Unit Human Resources Administrator I to support Lyman Briggs College as a primary point of contact for day-to-day HR operations. In this hybrid role based in East Lansing, you will coordinate and administer a broad set of human resources functions, partnering with college leaders and university HR teams to maintain consistent policy, compliance, and operational support.
The position reports to the College Budget Officer and supports a full range of employment categories, including faculty, academic and support staff, advisors, graduate assistants, temporary employees, and student employees. The role is eligible for a hybrid arrangement with four days per week on campus and one day remote, with standard 8–5 work hours.
What you’ll do
- Coordinate HR processes including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, appointments, annual raises, promotions, reclassifications, and employee separations across faculty, staff, graduate assistants, student employees, and temporary employees.
- Administer personnel transactions, maintain employee records, and help ensure compliance with university policies, employment regulations, and collective bargaining agreements.
- Act as a resource to employees and supervisors on HR topics such as HR policies and procedures, leave administration, performance management, workplace concerns, and employment-related questions.
- Support employee relations activities, including performance improvement processes, investigations, grievance administration, corrective actions, and conflict resolution.
- Coordinate HR support tied to college processes, including faculty review, promotion, reappointment, graduate assistant review, and accommodation processes in collaboration with college leadership and university partners.
- Manage payroll-related functions such as hourly payroll, additional pay, project pay, salary adjustments, and summer salary processing, including related reporting.
- Monitor and maintain HR data, workforce metrics, surveys, compliance documentation, and operational reports to support informed decision-making.
- Coordinate employee training, orientation, and onboarding activities, and support supervisor resources and professional development opportunities.
- Support compliance initiatives involving workplace safety, Title IX, Clery Act reporting, employee accommodations, and immigration and work authorization processes, along with other regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with college leadership, MSU Human Resources, and campus partners to improve HR operations and implement process improvements.
- Participate in special projects and perform other related duties supporting effective administration of HR services within the college.
What you’ll need
- Knowledge equivalent to completion of a four-year college degree program in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, plus experience managing human resource functions, designing and implementing training programs, and supporting human resource or labor relations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience.
- Working knowledge of MSU Human Resources policies and procedures for academic and non-academic employment, experience using HR and payroll systems, and familiarity with personnel processes for faculty, staff, graduate assistants, student employees, and temporary employees.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, support an inclusive and respectful workplace, and maintain confidentiality.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and use sound judgment.
Compensation and eligibility
- Salary: USD 68,000–76,000 per year.
- Hybrid eligibility: expected on-campus presence four days per week with one day remote.
