Job Description
San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program (SDVLP) is seeking a people leader to guide end-to-end HR operations for a mission-driven organization. In this onsite role based in downtown San Diego, you will manage key HR systems and processes, partner with senior leadership on strategic workforce planning, and oversee a team member in the HR function.
Reporting into senior leadership, the Director of Human Resources supports SDVLP’s culture through hiring, policy development, employee relations, performance management, learning and development, HRIS oversight, and compensation and compliance. This exempt position supports a 20 to 25-hour work week with an expectation of working from SDVLP’s San Diego downtown office at least 3 days per week.
Role overview
- Lead full-cycle recruitment, including workforce planning, job postings, screening, interviews, and offer negotiation.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve HR policies and procedures, including the employee handbook, ensuring compliance with applicable federal and state employment laws.
- Oversee onboarding, orientation, and offboarding to support a consistent employee experience.
- Manage employee benefits (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and 401(k)) and serve as the primary liaison with benefits brokers and vendors.
- Oversee performance management systems, including annual reviews, goal-setting frameworks, and performance improvement plans.
- Coach managers and staff on employee relations, conflict resolution, and HR best practices.
- Lead learning and development by identifying training needs and coordinating professional development opportunities.
- Oversee HRIS systems, currently Paycom, ensuring data integrity and using reporting capabilities to support organizational decision-making.
- Conduct compensation benchmarking and maintain equitable, competitive pay practices aligned with the nonprofit sector.
- Champion employee engagement, recognition, and retention strategies aligned with SDVLP values and culture.
- Ensure organizational compliance with labor laws, including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEO, and California-specific employment regulations.
- Partner with senior leadership on workforce planning, organizational development, and strategic HR initiatives.
- Supervise the HR Coordinator, providing mentorship and day-to-day direction.
- Complete other HR-related tasks and projects as needed to support SDVLP’s mission.
Requirements
- 10+ years of progressive human resources experience, including at least 5 years in a management or lead HR role.
- Strong knowledge of federal and California employment law and HR compliance requirements.
- Experience managing benefits administration, compensation analysis, and performance management systems.
- Proficiency with Paycom or comparable HRIS platforms (Paycom experience preferred).
- Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and sound judgment.
- Experience supervising or mentoring HR staff.
- Nonprofit experience is preferred.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust across all levels of the organization.
- HR certification preferred.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
