Human Resource Generalist
Job Description
The HR Generalist provides operational and strategic human resources support primarily to the Physical Sciences and Engineering Directorate at Argonne National Laboratory, while contributing to laboratory-wide HRS initiatives and special projects.
Location and Compensation
Location: Lemont, IL, with a hybrid work arrangement. Salary range: USD 75,750 to 118,170 per year.
Responsibilities
- Serve as an HR liaison for employees and managers, delivering guidance on a broad array of HR issues and ensuring consistent policy application with a practical, operational focus.
- Analyze HR data and workforce metrics to identify trends, inform recommendations, and support resolution of workforce and organizational opportunities.
- Collaborate with hiring managers on workforce planning and recruitment strategies, including crafting job descriptions, advising on compensation, and guiding hiring approaches.
- Work with Employee Relations to advise managers on employee relations matters, performance management issues, and workplace concerns, ensuring alignment with policies and legal requirements.
- Support cyclical HR programs such as performance appraisals, talent reviews, merit planning, promotions, and compensation adjustments.
- Participate in HR projects and process-improvement initiatives aimed at boosting operational efficiency, service delivery, and the overall employee experience.
- Assist in developing and executing communication and change management plans for new or revised HR policies, procedures, and programs.
- Support laboratory and directorate recognition and rewards programs that reinforce organizational values and employee engagement.
- Maintain accurate and well-organized electronic and physical HR records in compliance with policies, confidentiality standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in providing leadership, coordination, and guidance to directorate support staff to ensure effective administrative and operational support.
Requirements
- Education and experience: A Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of HR experience across multiple functions or a Master’s with 2+ years, or an equivalent combination.
- Solid knowledge of HR practices and administration.
- Ability to interpret and implement Argonne policies and procedures across HR, Laboratory, and Division levels.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to interact confidently with Division Directors, Line Managers, the HR team, and cross-organizational collaborators.
- Discretion in handling sensitive information and HR matters.
- High attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
- Capability to manage multiple tasks, balance competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Strong collaboration with internal and external partners to achieve objectives and implement solutions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Demonstrates alignment with Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
- U.S. citizenship proof is required to comply with federal regulations and contractual obligations.
- Experience with Workday or a similar HRIS is preferred.
- Education in human resources or related field is desirable, with HR professional certification highly preferred.
