Human Resources and Administrative Officer
Job Description
Physicians for Human Rights seeks a Human Resources and Administrative Officer to support HR operations, IT management, and office administration in a hybrid New York setting.
Responsibilities
- Support the Director of Human Resources in delivering HR initiatives that improve employee experience, organizational effectiveness, compliance, and operational excellence.
- Manage the recruitment process, including job postings, candidate screening, and scheduling interviews; oversee the internship program.
- Assist with HRIS reporting and manage client relationships.
- Coordinate new hire orientation programs and assist in onboarding processes.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records in compliance with company policies and legal requirements.
- Safeguard the confidentiality and security of HR information.
- Manage consultant contracts, including ongoing renewals.
- Address employee payroll inquiries and help resolve discrepancies.
- Support benefits administration activities, including enrollment, changes, and terminations; address employee inquiries regarding benefits programs.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations; stay informed of labor law changes and HR best practices.
- Act as a point of contact for employee relations matters and help resolve concerns and conflicts.
- Coordinate training programs and professional development initiatives; monitor completion and maintain records.
- Participate in HR projects, providing support and contributing to project goals.
- Compile HR metrics and reports to support decision-making; analyze HR trends and patterns.
- Support employee engagement efforts, staff events, and internal communications for a positive hybrid and remote workplace culture.
- Oversee onboarding and offboarding setups, including IT accounts and systems access.
- Manage laptop and inventory distribution with proper tracking and maintenance; collaborate with IT to address tech issues.
- Oversee building vendor management and office facilities, including end-of-lease processes for the New York office.
- Maintain the central filing system for official records and other materials, including office safety and OSHA compliance knowledge.
- Ensure office supplies are stocked and organized.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience supporting human resources, office administration, or people operations.
- Strong understanding of HR practices, policies, and employment laws.
- Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy.
- Proficient in MS Office applications.
- HR certification (e.g., PHR, SHRM-CP) is a plus.
- Knowledge of HRIS systems (e.g., benefits, payroll, etc.).

Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) is a U.S.-based international advocacy organization with a global network of medical, scientific, and legal experts. PHR documents human rights and humanitarian law violations, protects survivors, and promotes justice and universal human rights. The organization focuses on issues such as illegal weapons in conflict, attacks on civilians, the harms of torture and sexual violence, asylum rights, reproductive violence, and protecting medical facilities and frontline health professionals.
Role Description
We are seeking a qualified Human Resources and Administrative Coordinator to join our team. The role supports various HR functions and office operations, requiring a detail-oriented, organized professional with strong interpersonal skills.
Salary and Benefits Summary
This full-time role includes a 90-day probationary period and a hybrid work model in New York, NY. The salary range is $70,000-$75,000 and is commensurate with experience. Employer-paid benefits include medical, dental, disability, and life insurance, a retirement plan, and generous vacation.
