Job Description
Columbus City Schools is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to handle professional HR duties including recruitment, staffing, training, and policy interpretation onsite in Columbus, Ohio.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute plans to attract, hire, and retain highly qualified, diverse applicants.
- Participate in planning discussions about creating new units and reorganizing existing ones.
- Consult with leadership on staffing needs and propose solutions aligned with organizational requirements.
- Provide guidance to district leadership on recruitment policies, rules, and procedures.
- Identify pre employment issues and advise whether to proceed with hires.
- Evaluate proposed policies for impact on HR programs and operations.
- Analyze current HR and organizational issues; suggest alternative approaches and solutions.
- Design and deliver or coordinate employee training; advise stakeholders on training needs.
- Implement and monitor performance evaluation methods for timeliness and consistency; assist in establishing performance standards.
- Oversee assigned HR processes to ensure proper implementation and compliance.
- Review and assist updating job classifications; manage authorized headcount; help draft position descriptions.
- Draft technical standards, manuals, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Prepare reports and draft correspondence.
- Interpret and apply HR laws, work rules, and labor contracts; respond to related inquiries.
- Review contract language to ensure outcomes for all parties are met.
- May supervise staff, conduct performance appraisals, approve or deny leave, and initiate disciplinary actions.
- Additionally handle recruitment for district personnel including administrators, teachers, and support staff.
- Also manage onboarding and offboarding processes for all district personnel.
Requirements
- Requires a bachelor's degree and at least two years of professional HR experience in an HR office, department, or organization.
- A master's degree in a related field may substitute for one year of the required experience.
Department Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in educational recruitment, particularly within a large urban school district.
- Familiarity with certification and licensure requirements for educational professionals.
- Knowledge of collective bargaining environments, including experience working with unions and professional associations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of human resources principles and practices, plus awareness of federal and state employment laws and guidelines.
- Solid understanding of administrative practices and English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Familiarity with bargaining unit contracts and general management, supervisory, and conflict management concepts.
- Ability to interpret complex policies, provide guidance, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
Physical and Mental Demands and Work Environment
- Tools and equipment used: desktop PC with keyboard and mouse, laptop, scanner, calculator, software, desk, and adjustable chair.
- Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, and related movements.
- Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions (keyboard and mouse); occasional reaching.
- Lifting: Occasional lifting and carrying under 10 pounds.
- Environment: Office setting with potential for irregular or extended hours.
- Attendance: Regular and punctual presence at the worksite is required.
- Mental demands: Maintains emotional control under stress and works with frequent interruptions.
