Job Description

Green Thumb is expanding its People Team to better support its Illinois retail footprint, blending hands-on HR operations with strategic partnership. The Human Resource Business Partner will operate in a hybrid role based in Plainfield, IL, with a compensation range of USD 80,000 to 90,000 annually, and will collaborate closely with Retail HR, Talent Acquisition, and field teams to uphold compliance and cultivate a thriving workplace. This position also supports Green Thumb’s Central and Southern Illinois locations and requires a strong onsite presence.

Responsibilities

  • Talent Management Support: Guide managers across the employee lifecycle, overseeing recruitment, onboarding, performance management, employee development, and offboarding. Assist with performance management activities, including goal setting and development or improvement plans.
  • Project Management: Lead or actively participate in cross-functional initiatives, developing programs, improving processes, implementing new initiatives, and delivering training.
  • Employee Relations: Handle low-risk employee relations matters independently, conduct investigations and address concerns, escalating as needed. Provide guidance on core HR policies, assist with conflict resolution and disciplinary actions, and document HR processes.
  • Data and Reporting: Collaborate with the HR Business Partner to interpret data on turnover, headcount, and Inclusion & Belonging, identify trends, and deliver data-driven insights to inform decisions and drive continuous improvement.
  • Collaborative Partner: Build and maintain trusted relationships across the organization, including with Retail HR, Talent Acquisition, People team leaders, and the Retail Field team, to support daily operations and align with culture and business priorities.
  • Compliance & Policy: Stay current on federal, state, and local employment laws; ensure HR activities comply with regulations. Support policy implementation, maintain accurate records, protect confidentiality, and ensure cannabis-related regulatory compliance.
  • Culture Consigliore: Contribute to scaling and enhancing Green Thumb's culture by driving employee engagement, morale, and positioning the company as a leading place to work in the cannabis industry.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources, or a related field (preferred).
  • Experience: 4+ years as a strategic business partner and/or progressive HR Generalist experience.
  • Industry/Environment: Experience supporting a retail or manufacturing environment or a high-growth, start-up, fast-paced, and complex work environment is a plus.
  • Certifications: PHR, SHRM-CP, or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Travel: Ability to travel up to 75%.
  • Communication & Influence: Excellent communication skills with the ability to confidently interface with all levels of the organization as a trusted partner, including presenting information and discussing sensitive topics.

  • Laws & Compliance: Strong knowledge and application of federal and state employment laws.
  • Attention to Detail & Compliance: Impeccable attention to detail; must pass background checks and remain compliant with all legal or company regulations for working in the cannabis industry.
  • Licensing & Age: Must possess a valid driver’s license, be at least 21 years old, and be approved by the state badging agency to work in the cannabis industry.

The Role

The Human Resources Business Partner plays a key role on Green Thumb's People Team, focusing on interpreting, implementing, and executing People initiatives, programs, and policies to ensure regulatory compliance, enhance employee engagement, and sustain a positive work environment in day-to-day operations. The ideal candidate understands traditional HR functions including employee relations, payroll, benefits, and talent management, works with an inclusive mindset, takes initiative, and approaches problems with practical, solution-focused thinking. This position supports Green Thumb's Central and Southern Illinois locations and requires a strong onsite presence.
