Human Resources and Development Associate/Manager
Job Description
Santa Barbara Rescue Mission seeks a Human Resources and Development Associate/Manager to support HR, development, grant writing, volunteer management, and Board coordination.
Responsibilities
- Oversee payroll processing, salary administration, and deductions
- Manage employee benefits including health coverage and retirement plans
- Draft job descriptions, prepare onboarding materials and orientation, and handle terminations
- Assist staff and supervisors with corrective actions, performance reviews, and evaluations
- Maintain personnel files, verify certifications, and perform regular file audits
- Ensure compliance with state and federal employment laws and regulations across HR functions
- Review and manage personnel and organization insurance policies including workers compensation, general liability, and health insurance
- Collaborate with the President on grant writing and funding requests
- Coordinate the annual foundation grant calendar and ensure grant reporting is submitted on time
- Communicate effectively with foundation personnel regarding funding requests
- Identify new grant opportunities through research, networking, and related activities
- Provide backup gift processing during peak periods
- Protect donor confidentiality and ensure proper procedures for gifts
- Assist with proper entry and receipting of all in kind donations
- Support key Associates with relevant gift and financial matters as they arise
- Provide occasional event and mailing support
- Coordinate and staff Board and committee meetings
- Maintain calendars and coordinate activities across departments
- Prepare meeting packets and minutes
- Record and securely store motions, minutes, and handouts
- Staff Program and Personnel Committee and Development Committee meetings
- Oversee volunteer correspondence and inquiries about opportunities, connecting them with program staff
- Identify volunteer needs, support recruitment and training, and maintain accurate volunteer records
- Serve as the go to staff member regarding volunteer opportunities, concerns, and planning
- Support other administrative projects as needed
- Coordinate cross functional meetings and events including board, committees, strategic planning, and holiday events
Requirements
- 1+ year of administrative or nonprofit experience, or a Bachelor's Degree
- Ability to work with guidance and grow toward increasing independence
- Clear written and in person communication, with ability to adjust tone for the audience
- Professional, credible presence with senior staff, board members, and external partners from day one
- Willingness to learn and grow valued as much as prior experience
- Hourly compensation: $24.00 to $26.00 per hour DOE
- 3+ years of HR experience; nonprofit development experience is a plus
- Proven ability to manage HR compliance, payroll, and benefits administration independently
- Skilled in handling sensitive conversations related to pay, performance, discipline, and separations
- Experience writing and managing foundation grants or other deadline driven writing
- Comfort leading cross functional projects and collaborating with executive leadership
- Annual compensation range: $63,000 to $85,000 per year
- Excellent time management, prioritization, and organizational skills
- Computer literacy and ability to learn new systems quickly

- Strong sense of responsibility and ability to work independently

- Availability for occasional evenings and weekends (approximately 4 evenings and 1 Saturday per year)

General Function
The Human Resources and Development Associate/Manager works across departments to keep SBRM operating effectively to serve clients and fulfill its mission. They are an integral member of the administrative team, collaborating across nonprofit functions with emphasis on human resources, development, grant writing, volunteer management, and Board coordination.
Pay
- Annual salary range: $50,440 - $85,000 per year
- Hourly wage: $24.00 - $26.00 per hour DOE
Work Location
- Onsite in Santa Barbara, California
