Human Resources Manager
Job Description
A strategic human resources leadership role in a Napa wine-growing operation, focusing on compliance, recruitment, and workforce development.
Responsibilities
- Design and execute recruitment plans for farm labor and seasonal staff
- Lead interviews, onboarding, and orientations in English and Spanish
- Communicate new hire paperwork and role expectations in employees' preferred language
- Collaborate with leadership to maintain adequate staffing to meet production needs
- Ensure adherence to California labor laws, including agricultural wage, hour regulations, breaks, and overtime
- Oversee compliance with federal programs such as Farm Labor Contractor licensing and H-2A where applicable
- Maintain accurate personnel files and I-9 documentation in line with regulatory requirements
- Translate and convey policies, procedures, and notices in both English and Spanish
- Serve as the primary contact for employee relations, grievances, and resolution
- Communicate workplace topics clearly to Spanish-speaking staff
- Conduct investigations and disciplinary actions in a fair, culturally aware manner
- Promote an inclusive, respectful, and culturally sensitive workplace
- Manage payroll processing with precise timekeeping, piece-rate tracking, and wage calculations
- Explain compensation structures and benefits in both languages
- Assist staff with inquiries on wages, benefits, sick leave, and workers’ compensation
- Ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA and agricultural safety standards
- Deliver safety training, including heat illness prevention and field sanitation, in both languages
- Manage workers’ compensation claims and coordinate return-to-work programs
- Develop and deliver training for employees and supervisors in English and Spanish
- Ensure understanding of workplace policies and procedures across the workforce
- Support performance management and leadership development initiatives
- Develop, translate, and enforce company policies and the employee handbook
- Maintain HR records and prepare management reports
- Support audits, inspections, and compliance reviews
- Assist with general business insurance requests
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent experience
- At least five years of HR experience, ideally in agriculture, farm labor contracting, or similar labor-intensive settings
- Extensive knowledge of California employment law
- Fluent in English and Spanish, both written and spoken
- Ability to lead meetings, trainings, and investigations in both languages
- Capability to translate HR documents and explain complex policies to Spanish-speaking staff
- Strong understanding of California labor and agricultural regulations
- Experience managing a diverse, multilingual, seasonal workforce
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills
- Cultural awareness and the ability to build trust with field employees
- Exceptional organizational and problem-solving abilities
- Proficiency with HRIS systems and the Microsoft Office suite
