Job Description

Second Harvest Northland is seeking an Accounting and Human Resources Coordinator to operate onsite in Duluth, Minnesota. This role supports both finance and HR functions, implements policies, and ensures compliance across the organization. It requires building positive relationships with program participants, partners, volunteers, donors, and staff while upholding the organization’s commitment to fairness, dignity, and respect.

Responsibilities

  • Foster constructive relationships with program participants, agency and community partners, volunteers, donors, staff, and other stakeholders, upholding fairness, dignity, and respect in all interactions.
  • Remain current on industry trends and maintain working knowledge of Feeding America Partner Food Bank Agreement requirements, HungerNet, and the Learning Hub as it relates to this role.
  • Act as the internal liaison to the contracted external financial firm, supporting financial policy implementation, procedures, compliance, and auditing activities with timely documentation and reporting.
  • Process accounts payable accurately and promptly in line with established policies, internal controls, and GAAP.
  • Process, record, and collect accounts receivable in accordance with policies, controls, and GAAP.
  • Support grant management by tracking expenses, preparing reimbursement requests, and submitting reports in line with grant requirements and deadlines.
  • Reconcile bank, credit card, and petty cash accounts to support monthly and year-end close activities.
  • Assist with management of bank and investment accounts, loans, lines of credit, wire transfers, EFTs, and ACH transactions, including signature authorizations.
  • Support the management, acquisition, inventory, and disposal of fixed assets.
  • Assist with supply purchasing to secure the best combination of price and quality while maintaining vendor services.
  • Promote clear internal communication to keep staff informed about financial and human resources initiatives.
  • Maintain confidential and secure financial and human resources records.
  • Administer the organization’s financial and HR technology platforms, including implementation, maintenance, training, security, and reporting.
  • Serve as the internal contact for employee referrals to supervisors or the external HR firm to support strong employee relations and policy clarity.
  • Assist with employee recruitment, including posting jobs, communicating with candidates, and scheduling interviews.
  • Coordinate onboarding and offboarding with accurate documentation, enrollment, and termination in the external HR firm’s payroll and benefits systems.
  • Oversee payroll processing by the contracted HR firm, ensuring accurate timekeeping, compensation, expense reimbursements, and benefit and leave deductions.
  • Support employee training, development, recognition, and engagement activities.
  • Contribute to the implementation of HR policies, procedures, and compliance, including compensation, benefits, status changes, postings, tracking, documentation, and reporting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Consulting CFO and/or President/CEO.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in accounting or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with a minimum of two years in related work.
  • Interest in hunger issues or related social services.
  • Strong analytical, data interpretation, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Capable of working independently with initiative and sound judgment, and able to collaborate with diverse teams.
  • Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft 365.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; some local travel may be required.
