Human Resources Assistant - Onsite
Job Description
UNFI is seeking an onsite Human Resources Operations Assistant in Commerce, California. The role provides hands-on HR support across more than 50 distribution centers, handling onboarding and offboarding, records management, benefits administration, and employee relations. The position is onsite and offers a salary range of USD 50,000 - 75,900 per year.
Responsibilities
- Record, maintain, and report HR information with confidentiality and control.
- Manage the human resources database, ensuring accurate data entry and cross-checks.
- Ensure HR files and records comply with legal requirements and company policies.
- Ensure new hire paperwork is complete, current, and compliant with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Process employment verification forms and handle unemployment claims as needed.
- Prepare miscellaneous research, reports, and memos as requested.
- Respond to associate questions and issues promptly and courteously.
- Support and protect the company’s professional reputation.
- Establish and maintain effective communication and collaboration with personnel and management.
- Assist with onboarding and offboarding of associates, including provisioning and supplies as appropriate.
- Coordinate and support cyclical HR processes such as merit, talent management, performance reviews, and annual enrollment.
- Keep management informed of area activities and significant problems.
- Provide associates with information on pay, benefits, and interpretation of HR policies and programs.
- Assist in planning and coordinating associate engagement activities.
- Stay informed on state and federal law updates and related HR developments.
- Support HR projects and initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws.
- Foundational understanding of talent acquisition techniques, including recruiting, interviewing, and selection.
- Basic understanding of compensation and benefits policies, and employee relations practices.
- Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Ability to work in a fast paced office environment.
- May occasionally require flexibility in scheduling.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
- Well organized with the ability to prioritize and multitask.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Basic understanding of human resource functions.
- Ability to meet deadlines accurately and efficiently.
- Accurate and attentive to detail.
- Ability to assist and support others.
- Good judgment, with awareness that supervision may not always be immediate.
- Minimum 2 years of HR experience.
- Associate’s Degree in Business.

Physical Environment / Demands
- Some travel may be required up to 10 percent.
- Most work is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment.
- Incumbent may sit for long periods at a desk or computer terminal.
- During duties, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
- Occasional use of calculators, keyboards, telephones, and other office equipment is required.
- Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be necessary to complete tasks.
