Job Description
The Lighthouse for The Blind in New Orleans is seeking a senior Human Resources leader to guide policy, people operations, and workforce strategy on site in New Orleans, LA. This role reports to the CFO and offers a yearly salary in the range of $85,000 – $90,000, with the opportunity to shape the organization’s people programs, from recruitment and onboarding to development, performance, and payroll. A bachelor’s degree is required, along with at least six years of HR experience, including nonprofit exposure.
What you will do
- Develop and administer HR plans and programs that align with Lighthouse Louisiana’s operations, covering recruitment, onboarding, performance management, promotions, exits, and related activities.
- Engage with employees regularly to foster a connected and informed workplace.
- Review and update the employee handbook policies to reflect current practices and legal requirements.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws; implement best practices and revise policies as needed.
- Coordinate ongoing professional development, including required and elective training, with management and maintain a tracking system.
- Administer the payroll system and HR information system (HRIS) to meet the organization’s personnel information needs.
- Lead the performance evaluation process and assist management with reviews and related support.
- Drive recruiting and hiring end to end, from requisition through onboarding and orientation.
- Post openings internally and externally to build a diverse and qualified applicant pool.
- Support hiring managers with screening, interviewing, offers, and background checks, ensuring federal suitability requirements are initiated as appropriate.
- Coordinate onboarding with hiring managers to ensure new hires understand employment guidelines, have the necessary tools, receive relevant training, and are oriented to the facility.
- Maintain adherence to hiring processes and best practices across the organization.
- Manage compensation tracking and provide input on the development of the compensation program.
- Oversee benefits enrollment for new hires during onboarding and manage ongoing benefits administration with external vendors.
- Oversee HRIS management, including leaves of absence, benefit invoice reconciliations, and platform rollouts to support personnel relations.
- Oversee benefits open enrollment and ensure compliance with benefits reporting requirements.
- Collaborate with external benefits administrators to meet legal and reporting obligations.
- Ensure data collection and reporting for HR employment regulations, including AbilityOne, Veterans, unemployment, and Affordable Care Act, and advise management on required actions.
- Ensure compliance with National Industries for the Blind reporting and audit activities, and review forms such as Forms 5500 and ADA tax forms.
- Supervise the HR Specialist and ensure thorough training in all duties; review personnel actions for accuracy and appropriateness.
- Oversee bi weekly payroll processing and supervise payroll staff within the HR Department.
- Perform additional duties as needed to support the organization.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with coursework focused on human resources.
- Minimum six years of professional HR experience, with at least four years in a nonprofit setting; experience with individuals with disabilities is preferred.
- Special knowledge includes proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience with web-based payroll and benefits systems; SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP is highly preferred.
- Supervisory responsibility: manages the HR Specialist.
- Physical: strong communication and interpersonal skills; good mobility; ability to travel to offsite locations and within the facility.
- Personality: dependable, well organized, adaptable, able to safeguard confidential information, and capable of working independently.
- Working conditions: office environment with some travel; remote work capabilities during weather events or facility closures.
- Work schedule: full time, 40 hours per week, with occasional evenings and weekends.
- Background check and drug testing required as a condition of employment.
